Description
Gazania is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Africa. They produce large, daisy-like composite flowers in brilliant shades of yellow and orange, over a long period in summer.
They are often planted as drought-tolerant groundcover.
While there are over 15 species of gazania grown in modern gardens today, there are four common types from which many hybrids have been developed.
Sunabout produces fully double honey colored flowers, and has a matting growth habit that makes it coveted for ground covers.
Sunset Jane is another double variety. Bred in Australia, it is known for its profusion of blooms and disease resistance.
Montezuma is the gazania known for its striking blooms of brown and orange, and its unique striped patterns with creamy tips.
Avalon is a compact hybrid which has single yellow followers with a circle of white spots towards the center.
Gazanias are grown for the brilliant colour of their flower which appear in the late spring and early summer. They prefer a sunny position and are tolerant of dryness and poor soils.
